Why do I need a knee brace?

Will wearing a knee brace help prevent injury?
Knee braces have become a common treatment option for millions of Americans, young and old, who suffer from knee pain. They are inexpensive, easy to find, and comfortable to wear. The two most common reasons to wear knee braces are structural support and pain relief. The ones that we are going to focus on are called offloading knee braces.

What do knee braces do?

Specifically, an off-loading brace, like the type that we provide, takes the pressure off the injured part of the knee and allows ambulation without constantly reaggravating it.

What do different knee braces do even braces like the ones we use in our clinic?

Some braces only compress the knee and keep it warm. If you are trying to find a knee brace to prevent an injury, here are the most common varieties to choose from and the benefits they provide for structural support.

Functional braces Studies have shown these types of braces provide some protection and additional stability to the knee after it has been injured.

Rehabilitative braces These limit side-to-side and up-and-down movement of the knee while it is healing after an injury or surgery.

Prophylactic braces These are designed to prevent injury to the knees during contact sports.

The decision to wear structural support for the knee should be based on several factors, including:

How can a patient ensure they have a good knee brace?

If you are considering the use of an offloading knee brace, fitting in our clinic is done by a trained professional to ensure proper use of a brace, along with adjustments of the brace. Periodically, the brace needs to be checked for fit and wear.

How long are most knee braces good for?

They will hold up to years of use.

What else can be done for knee pain?

Along with regular use of our knee braces, to get a full benefit of improved mobility and reduction of the pain they presented in the initial visit. Most of the patients that we see are recommended a medically supervised rehab program specific to their condition.  Any rehab/exercises prescribed medically can be performed clinically under supervision and assistance, then performed in the home with modifications to ensure safety.
